[Dr. Millie Schweky]: [00:00:00] Hey sis, and welcome back to the What they didn't tell You from Court of Floor. I'm your girl, Dr. Milli, your favorite pelvic floor physical therapist, and I'm here with Dr. Dana Bauer, a PhD and highly qualified dietician with an impressive academic background and expertise in the fields of psychology, physiology, dietetics, nutrition, neuroscience, and endocrinology.
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: Her focus is on hormone nutrition, including PCOS, fertility and endometriosis. Yardena, Welcome back to the studio. Uh, today we're talking about red light therapy and hormone repair. Can you tell us what red light therapy is?
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: Oh, red light. I love red light. Did I do red light on you? Yes, I've done
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: it in your
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: office.
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: Fantastic. So I have a red light machine. Um, red light is trending, but this is one of those things that's trending and it's got science behind it. Um, so red light, we're talking about the waveland. So you need good quality red light. We get it naturally and for free from the sun. Um, as we spoke about last time, which is like 10 minutes of sun in the [00:01:00] morning gives you your red light for free.
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: But we also talking about using, um, the red light on concentrated amounts on concentrated areas. So the red light is going to give us, um, it goes to the mitochondria, so it's gonna give us energy renewal, um, more energy in, um, calms inflammation. It's got, it's really good for, um, skin for boosting collagen.
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: So a lot of, uh, my perimenopause clients like that just to increase collagen 'cause there is natural collagen lost. Um, as we age. I also have my PCOS clients who have, um, acne and scarring and the red lights helps with that.
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: And how does it help support our hormones or does it not?
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: Um, so it, it doesn't directly, it'll probably have an indirect effect on our hormones.
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: Um, the natural red light from the sun. Helps our hormones get into circadian rhythm.
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: Okay.
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: Um, the red light
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: from, so how often and how long should someone be using red light therapy to see benefits? It's, it's really
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: weekly to every day. Um, [00:02:00] okay. And it also helps with wound healing. So you can put like the red light over like the one
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: area to really help it heal.
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: So why would someone buy it? And how much money do you think you need to spend to get a good quality one? Like why would someone buy, I understand a lot of people these days are buying it for their skin. Like, I know for example, when I use it in your office, we did it over my liver. What would like, what?
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: How does that work? If I wanted to replicate that at home, can I, or do I need to buy a very fancy machine to do that? No, I don't think you need to buy a
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: very fancy machine. I think you need to buy a good quality machine that's got some, some validation of it's, you know, quality. Mm-hmm. Um, like
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: you could look on the website for a certificate.
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: Yeah, look for certificate low, EMF and how often? You said one to once a week. So once a day. Yeah. All right. So just can you tell us a little bit more about like, what is it for, like why, why'd you use it on a thyroid, on an abdomen? So red light is
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: gonna be good for thyroid health. So it's just going to the, the thyroids function is homeostasis with the hy, it works with the hypothalamus in the [00:03:00] brain.
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: It works with the brain to keep us in homeostasis. So it's temperature control. It's, uh, metabolism. So the people who have like under-functioning thyroid often very cold difficulty, um, losing weight 'cause they got slow metabolism. They've got, so they, and they got a load. Thermostats, so their temperature's low.
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: So you, you'll want to help give them more energy and an metabolic boost. Mm-hmm. And that's where, and um, that's where the red light will help the thyroid.
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: Amazing. Let's look together for a link for a whole model that we recommend for people. Great. We could put the link in the show notes and, uh, how does someone know where on their body they should be using it?
[Dr. Yardena Bauer]: Generally, if you don't have any specific area you wanna be working on, you can just put it on your face. Mm-hmm. Any, anyway, like, let's boost some collagen in the face. Otherwise you put it on the specific, the specific area that you wanna be working on for wound healing or, um, information.
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: Yeah. I actually had really bad wrist pain that was going on for years when I would do pushups or getting on on my hands for a plank.
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: I would get really bad pain in my wrist, and I started working at this [00:04:00] office, shout out to forward pt, where I used to work in New York that had a really fancy red light laser machine, and I was pregnant for a long time and I was working there, so I wasn't really able to use it on myself. And then after I gave birth and I came back from maternity leave, I literally used a laser on my wrist for 15 minutes.
[Dr. Millie Schweky]: My pain never came back. Ever. It was going on for maybe two years before this, but it wasn't like debilitating. I would just kind of like feel it after a workout. This was, I wanna say, four years ago, or three and a half to four years ago that I used it. So I'm a big fan of red light therapy. Okay, see you guys next time.
